An earlier report from French publication L’Equipe revealed that Varane has informed Real Madrid officials that he wants to leave the club this summer after more than a decade in Madrid on the back of his transfer from Lens in his native France. Varane signed for Real Madrid as a teenager and he has developed into one of the best defenders in the world during his time with the Spanish La Liga club.

Manchester United are not the only club keen to sign Varane from Real Madrid this summer. Apart from the Red Devils, French giants Paris Saint Germain (PSG) want to seal a return to French club football for the defender who was part of the France squad that surprisingly exited the ongoing Euro 2020 tournament at the round of 16 stage.

France were the tournament favourites but they could not live up to the tag winning just once in their four games at the tournament. Varane was a regular in the France squad at the tournament as he featured in all the four games including three games in the so called Group of Death (Group F). France beat Germany 1-0 courtesy the own goal from Mats Hummels in their tournament opener and didn’t record another win till they exited the tournament at the hands of Switzerland in the round of 16.

On Varane, a fee of around €50m would be enough to secure his transfer from Real Madrid this summer and it remains to be seen if Manchester United can convince him to leave Spain for the Premier League rather than a return to France to play for PSG who are keen to reclaim the Ligue 1 title they lost to Lille last season ahead of the new league campaign.
